The residential construction industry is in a depression. From a peak employment in 2005 of 1,000,000 to a current level of only 560,000 we have a 46 percent loss. What is hidden in these figures is the fact that many current employees are actually doing repairs and maintenance. The percentage of jobs lost in new construction is even higher.
