The construction industry needs to think LEAN. The industry should stop thinking in terms of either LEAN manufacturing or LEAN construction. Obviously, LEAN thinking it is applied differently in manufacturing than in construction, but the fundamentals are the same.
However, even contractors may need to think in terms of LEAN manufacturing. Read on for three situations where the contractor could use LEAN manufacturing.
Below are three situations where the contractor could use LEAN manufacturing:
-
Many clients of contractors are in manufacturing. Since one the premises of LEAN thinking is to maximize the value for the client, insuring the factory is built to the best LEAN manufacturing standards would deliver greater value to the client. Contractors should be worried about making sure the design of what they build is the best design solution and when dealing with manufacturers this will probably involve some LEAN manufacturing concepts.
-
Contractors often deal with manufacturers as suppliers. This makes them part of the contractor’s supply chain. Contractors need to work with their supply chain to improve the chain’s efficiency and when working with manufacturers, it helps to understand the LEAN manufacturing process.
-
Finally, many contractors today are doing more and more off site fabrication, which is a manufacturing process. Therefore, to insure their fabrication process is efficient they need to understand LEAN manufacturing.
In the end it is not about LEAN manufacturing or LEAN construction, it is about LEAN thinking. The industry needs to apply the principles of LEAN thinking in the most appropriate manner for the situation regardless of the title applied.
